Low Birth Weight Babies

County: Washoe
Measurement Period: 2022

Percent of births under 2,500 grams (5 pounds, 8 ounces) considered low birth weight.

Why is this important?

Low birth weight babies have increased risks for specialized medical care, including respiratory distress, heart problems, anemia, lung disorders, infections, as well as infant mortality.  They also experience more long-term developmental and neurological disabilities than normal weight babies, including links to lower high school graduation rates, an increased risk of hypertension, diabetes, stroke, heart attack, and heart disease.  Prenatal care saves signifiant dollars later in life.
