Labor Force Participation Rate

County: Washoe
Measurement Period: 2023
The proportion of the population 16 years and older that is in the labor force.

The labor force includes all people classified in the civilian labor force (civilians 16 and older either employed or unemployed and actively seeking work), plus active duty members of the US Armed Forces (Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard).

Why is this important?

In conjunction with the unemployment rate, the labor force participation rate is an indicator of the availability of workers and the strength of the economy.  The rate varies over time due to social (e.g., COVID, higher education attendance), demographic (e.g., Baby Boomers retiring) and economic changes (recessions).  Higher rates may indicate workforce skills are meeting employer needs.
