ACT!vate Omaha

A Good Idea

Description

ACT!vate Omaha is a community-wide initiative that aims to encourage all Omahans to be active as a part of daily living. In addition to marketing efforts to remind people of the importance of daily physical activity, ACT!vate Omaha supports and encourages changes in urban design, land use, and transportation policies to cultivate and support active living, a way of life that integrates physical activity into daily routines.

Goal / Mission

The mission of ACT!vate Omaha is to create awareness, advocacy and excitement about activity and the importance of designing our community for active lifestyles.

Results / Accomplishments

ACT!vate Omaha held focus groups to craft physical activity messages. The four best-tested messages were used to create a publicity campaign. Posters, billboards, TV and radio spots and a fresh interactive website are branding and promoting physical activity as fun and easy in Omaha. This campaign has positioned Active Omaha as the local expert and resource for physical activity in Omaha. Their logo is a regionally recognized symbol for physical activity and is becoming the 'good housekeeping seal of approval' on local activities.

The "Moving Day" kick off was held May 24, 2005 with a ribbon cutting and walk along the riverfront. Over 300 people attended with representation from walkers, bicyclists, elementary students, gardeners, Boys and Girls Club, health systems, and the Omaha Chamber of Commerce. Information on a variety of other ongoing projects and resources promoting active living can be found on their website.
