Truckee River Average Yearly Total Nitrogen

Select a Testing Station
Measurement Period: 2016

Truckee River annual average monitoring samples (total milligrams/liter) to determine if the river is meeting water quality standards established for the Total Maximum Daily Loads for Phosphorus, Nitrogen and dissolved solids set under Section 303 of the Clean Water Act.  Maximum annual average anti-degradation =  0.3 mg/l;  annual average beneficial use at Vista/Lockwood = 0.75 mg/l  (nitrate standard for drinking water is 10 mg/l;  nitrate is a component of the total nitrogen load).

Note that samples are not collected every month each year, and include storm, flood and drought years. [Site nutrient and TDS data analysis were discontinued in 1999 for the station @ E. McCarran Bridge. Vista Gage was discontinued for restoration work in 2011, and moved from the station above Lockwood to @ Lockwood/T4 in 2012.]

Why is this important?

The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) oversees compliance with the Federal Clean Water Act and conducts a comprehensive water quality analysis every two years to identify impaired waterbodies and create a priority list for which plans are needed to restore water quality.  River pollutants or stressors include temperature, total Phosphorus, total Nitrogen, turbidity and many other impairments.  In low water years, we often see water quality improve because less water carries fewer pollutants into the river.  Expect to see increased levels of pollutants in years with wet winters.
