Knowing that the Truckee River Supplies 85% of Our Drinking Water

This indicator identifies that the percentage of people responding that they know that the Truckee River supplies 85% of drinking water in the Truckee Meadows.

One Truckee River (OTR) conducted it's regional-wide survey starting in 2021 to gain input from Truckee Meadows residents to help evaluate the effectiveness of implementation of the OTR Management Plan, Phase I overtime, and gain general community insight to support OTR’s mission to ensure a healthy, thriving, sustainable river connected to the hearts and minds of its community. The survey was conducted online and promoted through social media in the month of May as part of the annual month-long celebration, Truckee River Month. OTR had 208 people respond to the 2021 survey, increasing to 342 in 2022. Note that some of the questions asked in 2022 were changed slightly from the prior year and new questions were added to the survey.

Why is this important?

So many of us take water for granted. We drink it without question and use it daily; however, we should understand more about where our water comes from.

It’s important to know where your water comes from is because our interest in protecting and conserving the sources of our drinking water - the Truckee River for most Washoe County residents - increases the more we know.

People are less likely to leave trash behind or dump toxic chemicals into the Truckee River if they know that water is the same water that comes through our taps in our homes. It is the water we drink, give to our children, bathe in, wash our clothes in, and cook with.
